Business Rates are collected by local councils which ultimately contribute towards the cost of local services. The rates are pooled by central government (except London) and redistributed to local councils according to the number of people living in the area. This money along with other revenue streams are used to pay for the services provided by the local council and other local authorities in the area..
The AVDC Business Rates team has responsibilities for:
- The collection of circa £45m from 4,500 properties
- Liaison with Valuation Office Agency with regard to the Rating List
- Administration of reliefs and exemptions, as appropriate
- Deal with timely billing and, where necessary, recovery of Business Rate charges
- Ensure Government returns are completed as directed
The range of support extends to include:
- inspector liaison with landlords with regard to empty properties and/or change of occupier
- liaison with Town Centre Manager
- advising on empty properties
- calculation of Small Business rate Relief
- handling Rating Appeals
- advice to landlords
- calculation of other reliefs and exemptions
- providing estimate rating bills for new occupiers
- part occupation certificates
